My guest on this week's episode of the Women in Technology Spotlight is Katherine Lightner, Director, Cloud Solutions Architecture, EMEA at VMware. Katherine, who is originally from the US, moved to the UK 13 years ago. Like many of us, she's a career changer. Initially, she planned a career in Health Management and got a degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. After quickly realizing that this was not what she wanted to do for the rest of her life, she took night classes in Windows administration and went on an exciting and highly successful career in IT.
Her journey is a great example of how the right support and mindset can allow women to harmonize passion, family, and careers.
As a hiring manager, Katherine looks for attitude and aptitude over specific skills. She recommends that young women don't listen to people trying to discourage them because they know best what they want to and can do. And, she would like to see more women applying for jobs even if they don't fulfill 100% of the requirements in the job description.
