In this episode, Rob meets with Dr. Stephen O'Connor of the National Institute of Mental Health. NIMH is the leading government organization for research into mental disorders.
Over his career, Dr. O’Connor has led many studies into suicide assessment, intervention, and prevention. In addition to his research, Dr. O’Connor has also served as a clinician for the University of Louisville’s Depression Center.
Dr. O'Connor discusses the shift amongst prevention and intervention strategies related to suicide, the "Zero Suicide" model, methods for assessing one’s suicidal intensity (which is now the preferred term for suicidal ideation), the posttraumatic stress associated with a survived suicide attempt, and finally we talk about the ideas of “thwarted belongingness” and “perceived burdensomeness” and how they influence a suicide attempt.
