Our guest today is Isaac Morehouse, founder of Praxis, a startup apprenticeship program, and the CEO of Crash, the career launch platform. He talks to us today about the current education shift in our country, the declining value of a college degree, and what employers are really looking for in the people they hire. Heather and Isaac begin the show today discussing Isaac’s passion for freedom and how he views it as the ability for someone to choose their own challenge. He explains that everyone struggles with hardships in life, but choosing which hardships we spend our time and energy engaging with for a deliberate purpose is a form of freedom. Once people can begin shifting from the mindset of what they “have to do” to the mindset of what they “choose to do,” they gain more freedom and autonomy over their own lives.
Isaac shares with listeners his personal journey towards becoming an entrepreneur and the unconventional path he took by following the mantra: “Don’t do stuff you hate.” He tried a multitude of different jobs, moving on whenever he began to realize he was hating what he was doing. This path kept leading him towards more autonomy to pursue his own vision until he eventually was inspired to create Praxis.
The idea for Praxis emerged from Isaac’s own frustration with his college experience and the inefficiency of the time, cost, and classes. He talks about how he found the courage to pursue the project because he was willing to fail just to see the results he discovered. Ultimately, Isaac’s work has led him to realize that people today need to switch their mindset when it comes to preparing for a career. The traditional path of going to college, getting a degree, putting that degree on a resume, and then being rewarded with a job is no longer a reliable model. Instead, Isaac explains that you need two things when entering the workforce: the ability to create value and prove it. By realizing this, those searching for a job can begin getting creative in the way they pitch themselves to employers.
Isaac discusses how the college degree has declined in value over the years, but he does recognize the social value it can have especially for parents and how many students end up attending college just to prevent disappointing them. From here, Heather and Isaac turn to how the current Covid-19 pandemic has allowed those who might have been freshmen to take a gap year without that traditional stigma and use it to stop and question the value of college and investigate other alternatives.
