Jude Thomas hosts the only all microtonal-radio program (Xen Radio) on KPISS, so we sat down with him to talk about the challenges of having a multi-genre program and being a selective curator. As a barbershop singer in Voices of Gotham, he is keenly aware of how melody and harmony interact, the unique oral traditions of the genre, and the relationship between vowel shapes, timbre, and pitch. We additionally discuss the connections between melody and harmony in music theory, and what that means for today’s musicians.
