2014 year of Agriculture and Food Security and also the theme of the 23rd African Union Summit which took place in Malabo, the Capital of equatorial Guinea. Transforming Africa’s agriculture, harnessing opportunities for inclusive growth and sustainable development was at the centre of discussions in Malabo. The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) which was established ten years ago was endorsed by the African Union Heads of State Summit as a new Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) programme in July 2003. CAADP is a growth oriented agricultural development agenda aimed at increasing agriculture growth rates to a minimum of 6% per year to create the wealth needed for rural communities and households in Africa to prosper. So, what came out of the Malabo Summit on issues that are of crucial importance to the development agenda of the continent? Commitments were made in 2003 when CAADP was launched. What has happened since then? Conflicts on the continent remain a destabilizing factor. When it comes to agriculture, one cannot dismiss the effects of Conflicts.
