Over half a century ago, the world met and decided that the holocaust should never happen again while the world idly watched. Not long ago the killing fields happened in Cambodia where, in a period of four years, almost two million people died from execution, torture, starvation and diseases. A genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge.
Then came Rwanda where more than a million people were killed in the space of 100 days. The year 1994…..the world looked on while Rwanda’s state inspired genocide unfolded on a population. Twenty years on, for genocide survivors this is a traumatic but extremely important occasion when they may publicly express the grief they still feel.
Tune in to this edition of “Tam Tam Express” as we ask: Where there initial warnings? What could have been done by the international community to stop these crimes against humanity? Was the world really unaware as the tragedy unfolded in front of the very eyes of the United Nations peacekeeping force? Have the lessons been learnt?
Rwanda has become a symbol of the modern-day failure of the world to end genocide. Too many times in our history have people pledged, “Never again” only to see similar tragedy repeat itself in another place.
