In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of women. Four UN agencies and offices were merged into one. Although the United Nations support for the rights of women began with the Organization’s founding Charter, looking back we find that a lot remains to be done as far as the advancement of women’s issues are concerned. Today, as the newly appointed Executve Director of UN Women, Mrs Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, takes her position, we ask: What will be her main focus? How well did her previous positions prepare her for the mamoth task ahead? What is her vision for UN Women?
