Description

Burundi’s electoral commission announced this past weekend that Pierre Nkurunziza has won a controversial term as president of Burundi, garnering almost 70% of the vote. The main opposition leader Agathon Rwasa denounced the win and demanded for fresh elections.Rwasa’s name remained on the ballot paper despite boycotting the poll with other three main rivals. International observers, including the US State Department and the European Union have said the elections were not free and fair. Critics said that the government harassed opposition supporters over the past few months, and at least 70 people have been killed in protests since the president announced in April that he was running for a third term.
