Today marks the International Mother Language Day, which is an annual observance held on this day to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) first announced this day on 17 November 1999; it was formally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
