The 19th of October sees South Africa commemorating the anniversary of Black Wednesday. It Highlights the occasion which occured 38 years ago when the then South African Government shocked the world by banning a host of newspapers, 19 organisations and scores of apartheid government critics were detained. The banning of the publications - The World and Weekend World on this day in 1977 was a brutal act of censorship the likes of which was not seen again until the imposition of the "State of the Emergency" in the mid 1980's. Today we want to look at the current state of media freedom on the African continent.
