Ivory Coast has recently seen protests, where protesters were calling for President Alassane Ouattara to step down at the end of his second term this year, but he insists on going for a third term. Another country in that region, Guinea, could face the same fate because President Alpha Conde plans to alter the constitution to accommodate a third term. This theme of third-term presidential terms is constantly a talking point in governance debates on the African continent. Why does this redundant conversation keep rearing its head in the continent’s political debate?
