South Africa’s Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, wants to have the taxi industry regulated by April next year. Following a three-day national taxi lekgotla government and stakeholders say they will work together to achieve this. Government has also committed to funding but it comes with serious changes including taxi operators paying tax. Meanwhile the National Taxi Alliance pulled out of the National Taxi Lekgotla saying that the gathering is merely a ploy to give the South African National Taxi Council power over them. The organisation has further called on Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula to release COVID-19 relief funds pledged for the industry.
