This week the State Capture Commission of enquiry saw former Finance Minister Des van Rooyen explain his relationship or meetings with one of the Gupta brothers. Van Rooyen's controversial appointment saw him tasked with replacing Nhlanhla Nene as minister. He explained that he had met with Rajesh Gupta on various occasions and said he believed that Gupta was interested in introducing himself as a businessman who did business with the African National Congress (ANC).
Van Rooyen had to further explain his decision to appoint two advisors, Mohamed Bobat and Ian Whitely, who has been linked to the Gupta family, Van Rooyen admitted that he knew very little about them when he decided to appoint them. In a previous testimony, Nomvula Mokonyane denied ever having influenced Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to drop investigations into Bosasa, allegations made by its former COO Angelo Agrizzi. Today the commission will hear more testimonies highlighting alleged corruption at the Passenger Rail Agency PRASA.
