Description

South Africa has lost two giants in the music industry just days apart. Sibongile Khumalo South African opera and jazz singer, and a recipient of the country’s second highest national order passed away after a stroke. Khumalo received the presidential Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2008, for her contribution to arts and culture. A trained soprano, she boasted a wide vocal range. Meanwhile Jonas Gwangwa was laid to rest last week, he was a songwriter, producer and an important figure in South African jazz for over 40 years. He spent most of his life in exile, not only did Gwangwa win acclaim for his music; he was also deeply involved in the struggle against white-minority rule in the country.
