Despite our high hopes for this book coming off of The Lost Hero, The Son of Neptune has come to a sputtering end and even its biggest supporter is grabbing a knife to put it in the ground. Focusing mostly on a huge battle where none of the conflict ultimately affects the plot, we can't even find respite in Rick Riordan's usual specialty of compelling characters. Instead, we finally close this door-stopper and let ourselves go into full autopsy mode. We talk about the world's holiest bludgeon, Mars having shooters all over, bad Giant specs, parallels between Gaea and Juno, Camp Jupiter's quantum racism box that only gets opened up when Frank proves himself to them, epic debate boy comebacks, big plays we wanted to see from Octavian, and whether or not we're satisfied with the button this book puts on everyone's arcs.
