Born in February 1930, John Doyle passed away in December 2010 and in his 80 years he became an icon of Tipperary and national hurling.
He's the subject for our latest episode of Warriors, the GAA podcast for you The42 members, as we take a closer look at his sporting life.
John Harrington is the chief writer for GAA.ie, and Doyle's biographer, having written in 2011 ‘Doyle - The Greatest Hurling Story Ever Told’. He guided us this week through the career of the Holycross-Ballycahill man.
Starting out in 1949 and finishing up in 1967, Doyle set a record for a Tipperary hurler in winning eight All-Ireland senior medals.
We hear about his life growing up in the 30s, first in Waterford and later in Tipperary, his inspirational hurling mentor Paddy Leahy, marking Christy Ring and being part of the famed Hell's Kitchen in the Tipperary defence during a notably different era in hurling.
