What is the one thing that when you forget it you finally come to know it?
Our passage from the ancient letter of 1Corinthians for this Sunday draws to a close the first section of the Apostle Paul’s letter. Take a few minutes this weekend and read 1 Corinthians 3:18 to the end of chapter 4. Our focus will be on 3:21-4:7, but it would be good for us to linger this weekend over the broader passage. Read it a few times. It takes some twists and turns.
How can Paul do what he says in 4:3-4? How can he possibly escape the crushing weight we all feel when we assess ourselves, our progress, maturity, growth, character, accomplishments, and when we know that others are pronouncing their own judgments on us? Just think of the freedom we might experience if we could imitate him.
Paul is showing the Corinthians, and us, that this type of freedom is possible. Are we ready to forget so that we can experience this?
I can’t wait to worship together.
