Don’t make this mistake.
If you want big change, big strength, big transformation, if you want dramatic results, don’t look big.
Look small.
It is the small things done consistently over the course of time that have the power to shape us profoundly. This is the strategy Tony Dungy, former NFL head coach, used to bring his teams consistently to the playoffs and win a Super Bowl. Dungy explains, “Champions don’t do extraordinary things. They do ordinary things, but they do them without thinking… They follow the habits they’ve learned.”
Consider the skills and talents you have used to build your life, even how your personal character has developed over time. Notice how the small things, the almost invisible habits, have carved and shaped you into the person you are today.
Advent is all about our posture towards time and the rhythms of time keeping we adopt. This Sunday we will look at a way of keeping time in small ways that has for thousands of years produced massive results.
If you want to change, if you want to grow, if you want deep abiding strength and hope, then you will want to learn this way, this small way, of keeping time.
