To recognize Mother's Day this week, Amanda Anderson led us in a study on Ruth.
Ruth was set in the time of Judges, a time when "everyone did as they saw fit" (Judges 21:25). This is not unlike our current postmodern culture, where personal autonomy rules and the intended authorship of the Bible has often lost its meaning.
Amanda led us through the story of Naomi; the loss of her husband and sons, her move, and Ruth's dedication to her. In Ruth 1:16 she said "where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God."
Ruth's and Naomi's story is one of lament (where God is okay with us being not okay all the time) as well as redemption in the form of Boaz the kinsman redeemer. Christ is our kinsman redeemer, the one who comes to the aid of His people and helps those who need it. In turn, we should go to God in our suffering, pour out our lives for others, and live according to the Word of God (and not whatever is right in our own eyes).
