Travel today to the “Old City” of Jerusalem and you still find, just outside the Eastern Wall of the Temple Mount, across the narrow Kidron Valley—an ancient grove of olive trees. Gethsemane. The name means “olive press,”—the huge stone press used to crush the oil from ‘ready for harvest,’ olives. Here, in the deep of night, Jesus and eleven disciples arrived from an upper room and a Passover meal. Here, in the early morning hours, Jesus’ twelfth disciple would betray Him with a kiss, triggering the events leading to His death. But Jesus would be ready. Through an agony of spirit deeper than any fear of death, deeper than the physical pain the Cross itself the decision would already be made. It was at midnight in the garden, in sweat and blood and prayer, that the fate of humanity hung in the balance. This weekend we celebrate the joy of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the decision He made on that “midnight in the garden.”
