"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies!”
We often find things in the bible that are hard to understand - difficult to wrap our minds around - but not this week; this week we will explore a command of Jesus that is very easy to understand but very hard to actually put into practice: the command to turn the other cheek, to do good to those that oppress you, and to give to those that wish to do you harm. If that wasn’t enough, Jesus concludes our passage this week with the admonition to “be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” This command of his seems so impossible, so impractical, so unattainable, that it could be tempting to ignore, downplay, or explain it away. Join us this week as we tackle what might be Jesus’ most radical ethical mandate - to love our enemy. Read Matthew 5:38-48 before this weekend and come ready to wrestle with this tough teaching.
