Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob traveled through a land they did not fully possess and were content to be called strangers and exiles because they awaited something better. We, too, walk through a land that is not our home because Christ has granted us citizenship in heaven. Join us for session five as we discuss what it means to be strangers and exiles here on earth, how we are called to live as such, and how we await our eternal home.
Verses Used:
Hebrews 11:13-16
Ephesians 2:1-6, 13, 19
1 John 2:15-17
Matthew 5:14-16
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Discussion Questions:
1. Why does the Bible call our spiritual ancestors strangers and exiles? Some versions use the word “pilgrim.” What do these words mean? If you apply them to your spiritual life, what insight does that give you as to how we are called to live here on earth?
2. The Bible clearly tells us we cannot have two masters. Though we desire to live for a heavenly kingdom, we are often distracted and preoccupied with things on earth. What is the greatest earthly challenge to you in living for a heavenly kingdom?
3. How does the Bible call us to live as citizens of heaven? (See 1 Peter 1:22-23, 2:11-17 & 1 Timothy 6:11-19). Which are the most challenging to you? Why are we called to live like this?
4. What does the Bible say we must endure as we await our heavenly country? (See Acts 14:21-22) What are your honest thoughts about that?
5. What are some reasons we may endure trial (See James 1:2-4 and 1 Peter 1:6-7 & 4:12) and how can we endure trial and tribulation well? What do we cling to in trial that gives us hope to endure? (See 1 Peter 1:13)
