This passage can be described as the gospel in a nutshell. Paul points to the “double trouble” of our sinful condition. Most of us may be aware of our debt of sin, but there is also a debt of righteousness (perfect obedience). Jesus paid the debt of sin on the Cross, effectively wiping the slate clean. If that was all he did, then we are simply back to square one. But Jesus did more. In what theologians call the Great Exchange, Christ took OUR sin and gave us HIS righteousness, thus satisfying God’s perfect justice. We explore this double cure today…how it shapes both the way we see ourselves in God’s eyes and the way we live out our faith.
