Mark draws our attention to the central issue with religion in the first century: replacing the commands of God with the traditions of man. Jesus encounters three sets of people in this section. The first are the religious who are making every effort to change themselves from the outside in. The next two are those who are desperate for change. Jesus changes them from the inside out.
