Most of us have a favorite proverb. While we may be familiar with a handful of individual proverbs, the book of Proverbs is a mystery. We don’t really know why we should read it or how to read it and as a result the book of Proverbs is largely ignored. But from this book comes a wealth of wisdom, insight, discernment, and life-giving instruction on how to live. The motto of the book is given in this first chapter and it sets the stage for the whole book, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Lord willing, by the end of the series, we will have a good grasp on the major themes in the book of Proverbs, know why it was written, and have the confidence to consume it regularly.
