Paul challenges the religious person’s thinking and belief that they have right standing with God because of having been given God’s law. Knowing the truth is not the same thing as living the truth. Jesus had this to say about those who teach God’s law, but don’t actually obey it; “…obey them and do what they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. Everything they do is done for men to see…” (Matthew 23)
