Description

Becoming a Generous Church

Rev. Ho-Ming Tsui

Scripture: 2 Cor. 8-9

How does Paul teach the Corinthian church to be generous?

a. Draws their attention to a theme, ie God’s grace toward us

b. Uses this example of a church (8:1)

If you want to become generous:

———

1. Re-order your priorities around generosity (8:2)

Make generosity your priority, save for the future and then consume.

How much should I give?

I. Aim to give increasingly and steadily, using the tithe as a baseline

II. Be willing to give spontaneously, when unique opportunities arise

———

2.Be prepared it will hurt (8:3)

Aim to give to the point where you have to trust God to provide.

We can sacrifice whatever is not our security.

———

3. Meditate on what Jesus did for you (8:3b-4; 8:8-9, 9:7)

Picture in your mind what it cost God to save you

———

4. Aim to be consistent (8:10)

———

5. Think investment rather than sacrifice (9:6-11)

———

Conclusion: Being generous is a response to God’s indescribable grace (v. 15)
