Making All Things New:
The Book of Genesis
Building Our Own Self-Salvation Project (The Tower of Babel)
Scripture: Genesis 11: 1-9
Rev. Ho-Ming Tsui
–––
Babel is Built (v. 1-4)
It is an archetype of a self-protecting, self-serving, self-glorifying culture.
It is the story of humanity trying desperately to recover what was lost in the garden.
Today, we are still building our Babels
1. On a Personal Level
• City: We want the right people to accept and praise us
• Tower: We want to display our importance
• Name: We want to be connected to greatness somehow.
2. On a Cultural Level
• Building cities within the city: Under sin, everyone is trying to build up their own tribe
• Building their own towers: Under sin, we see pride, excess, and exhaustion
• Building their own name or brand: Under sin, art, technology and business is an end itselfWhat is the result? An all-consuming, futile pursuit and mess!
–––
The Lord Intervenes (v.5-9)
Any judgment before the final judgment is an act of grace (ie. discipline)

Practical Takeaways
1. We are to be a city within a city (John 17:9; Jeremiah 29)
2. We are to spread out for the sake of the gospel (Rev. 7:9)
