Passion to Pray
Rev. Kelly Tam
Matthew 6:5-13

What does a vibrant prayer life look like in 2022?

God is more interested in the HEART of the one who is praying rather than the METHOD in which we doing it in.

5 “When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get. 6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
7 “When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. 8 Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
—Matthew 5:5-8

1. Praying is about pursuing intimacy with God (v6)

2. We also learn from this portion of Scripture that we need to be honest with our words before God. (v7)

3. We pray with faith and trust (v8)

9 Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
10 May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today the food we need,
12 and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
13 And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.
—Matthew 6:9-13

4. When we pray, we need to know who you’re speaking to (v9)

5. When we pray, we are aligning ourselves with God (v10)

6. When we pray, it is a reminder that we are in need of God (v11)

7. When we pray, we are reminded who we are before God (v12)

8. When we pray, we lean on God’s strength (v13)

The posture of the Lord’s prayer is this:

1. We acknowledge who God is
2. We want to be aligned with God’s plan
3. We declare that we are in need of God

RHCCC and Prayer

1. We see prayer as an act of worship and not an event
2. We believe that prayer is in all circumstances and with all peoples
3. We believe that we have the freedom to be creative in how we pray
