1. You have to choose joy
Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!—Psalm 32:11
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.—Romans 12:12
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.—James 1:2-3
2. There is a deep connection between joy and Jesus
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.—John 15:11
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.—Psalm 16:11
3. There are stages of choosing joy
The settled assurance that God is in control (1 Peter 5:7; Matthew 6:31, Psalm 55:22)
The quiet confidence that everything will turn out alright (John 16:22, 1 Peter 4:13)
The intentional choice to praise Him in all circumstances (Hebrews 12:2)
