Precept upon precept, line by line reading. Week 41 Torah Portion - Piynechac (Phineas) Numbers 25:10-30:1. Translation: Cepher

The Torah portion Pinechas, begins with Yahuah rewarding Pinchas, the grandson of Aaron the High Priest, for his zealous act of killing an Israelite man and a Midianite woman who were publicly defying Yah’s commandments. This act halted a plague that had already killed 24,000 Israelites. Pinchas is granted a covenant of peace and a perpetual priesthood, signifying divine approval of his actions. This section emphasizes the importance of zeal in the service of יהוה and upholding the sanctity of the community.

Following this, יהוה commands Moses and Eleazar, Aaron's son, to conduct a census of the Israelite men over the age of 20. This census is significant as it accounts for the new generation of Israelites who will enter the Promised Land, given that the previous generation perished in the wilderness due to their disobedience. The detailed enumeration also serves to allocate portions of the land to the tribes according to their population size. Additionally, the daughters of Zelophehad appeal to Moses to inherit their father's portion as he had no sons, leading to a landmark ruling that daughters could inherit if there were no sons, setting a precedent in Israelite inheritance laws.

The portion concludes with instructions regarding daily offerings and additional offerings for the Sabbath and festivals. This section outlines the sacrificial system to be observed in the Promised Land, ensuring that the Israelites maintain their religious obligations and worship practices. These offerings underscore the continuity of worship and the centrality of the Temple in Israelite religious life, reinforcing the themes of devotion and obedience to יהוה commandments.
