How does the largest human movement in history begin? It really is astounding to consider how inauspicious this beginning is. And yet all the major marks of Jesus' ministry are already on display. He brings good news - but it is the same 'good news' that will get him and John the Baptist killed. And yet it is also news good enough for these fishermen to walk immediately away from their lifelong vocation. Why does this 'good news' make some yawn in indifference, some want to kill, and yet others leave everything to follow him? That array of options could equally describe how people respond today, both in the church and beyond. So, if this news evokes such different responses - especially today - how can it be so 'good'? Let's talk about "Calling the Disciples" (Mark 1:4,14-20).
