Jesus argues with religious leaders about tradition, but the underlying joy of this passage is how Jesus understands Scripture. Isn't this just a culturally-conditioned, Bronze age text? Isn't it simply the compiled writings of fallible men? Shouldn't we filter the Bible through our own normative experience? Our society tends to think this way, and often Christians also function this way. But Jesus does not. Even among those critical of Christianity, Jesus is often still regarded as a profound thinker and teacher. So, let's simply ask ourselves, how does Jesus regard these writings? If we are followers of Christ, shouldn't we have the same view and practice as our Lord? Why is this essential to a thriving faith? Let's talk about the phrase Jesus said so often: “It Is Written” (Mark 7:1-13).
