July 3rd
Good day, Henry. Thank you for joining me and others on our Bible in a Year reading journey. We are halfway through. Greet your mom and dad for me. May the Lord continue to speak to our hearts from his Word.
Think about it, we are actually meeting with the God of our salvation when we open the book of books, the Bible. Kind of wonderful isn't it?
Our Bible reading today is in 2 Kings 5-8.
The podcast will focus on two events in the life and ministry of the young prophet Elisha, probably in his late twenties, early thirties.
“Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See, the place where we dwell under your charge is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan and each of us get there a log, and let us make a place for us to dwell there.” And he answered, “Go.”
Elisha took over the leadership of the school of the prophets from Elijah. In just a few short years, the number of students sensing God’s call to preach increased a great deal in Israel, even in the days of wicked kings.
O how the spiritual influence of Elisha was spreading. God was using the young man to inspire others to seek the Lord. The students appealed to their young teacher for approval in building a larger place for them to live and to study and learn about God and His calling upon their lives. Elisha said, “Yes...Go for it.”
“Then one of them said, “Be pleased to go with your servants.” And Elisha answered, “I will go.” So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees.”
Did you notice the relationship between the prophet and his students? Respect and no fear. The young students knew who their leader was. And there was an openness to ask questions and to make suggestions and to work together.
“But as one was felling a log, his ax head fell into the water, and he cried out, “Alas, my master! It was borrowed.” Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there and made the iron float. And he said, “Take it up.” So he reached out his hand and took it.”
