The Bible reading for today is in Deuteronomy chapters 24,25,26,27.
Moses continues to teach the younger generation of Israel the laws of God. Today we will learn what God expects and directs about Divorce and Remarriage. We learn some directions from God concerning the happiness of newlyweds. We learn wisdom concerning loans and paydays and helping the poor.
We also learn that God expected brothers to help each other in life and death...to perpetuate the name and the family legacy of the departed brother...to the glory of God. We also learn about the blessings that flow from tithing...and the curses that come upon the land because of lawlessness. And we can certainly testify to those blessings and curses in our own land all the way into the 21st century.
I do want to go back and take a closer look at the revelation of God’s laws concerning divorce and remarriage. But let me remind us of what we have already read in Genesis about marriage.
“When a man takes a wife...and marries her...According to Genesis 2...
1. He is no longer alone
2. He is in a good place
3. He leaves father/mother and cleaves to his wife
4. He now has a helpmate...one fit for him
5. He is “one heart” with his wife...they are married and become one for a lifetime.
Now back to the text...“if she (the wife) finds no favor in his eyes...because he finds some indecency in her...
1. She feels no forgiveness from her husband...
2. And He feels dissatisfied with his marriage...
Both have expectations that are not being fulfilled...Now do they end their marriage...get a divorce and find someone better to do life with...?
Yes...in this case the do...“so the disappointed husband divorces his wife...sending her out of his house...and she marries another...and her second husband hates her and divorces her...Then what?
Can she remarry her first husband? No. According to our text, that scenario is an “abomination” to the Lord and brings sin upon the land.
What God made good in marriage...much of mankind has defiled...and that’s bad enough...but add “brings sin upon the land”...that doesn't sound good.
Questions:
Is divorce the unpardonable sin? No. Not even close. Now...When a man won't believe and follow the cross-bearing Jesus...that’s unpardonable.
What does a Christian do first if he’s already been divorced? Divorce for anything other than adultery and abandonment must be humbly confessed as any other sin.
Then ask God to help you commit to marriage according to God’s word...a love for a lifetime...by God’s powerful grace.
