Isaiah 58:1-14
Big Question: Is our fasting God-Honoring or Self-Serving?
God’s Message to the Prophet Isaiah (58:1-2)
“Boldly confront My people for the sin of looking religious on the outside while ignoring the suffering of others.”
The People’s Complaint to God (58:3a)
“Why aren’t You responding to our FAST like we want?”
God’s Message to the People (58:3b-14)
The Problem: Fasting from food while mistreating people and overlooking those in need dishonors the Lord. (5:3-5)
The Promise: Three If/Then Statements
IF you work to liberate the oppressed and help those in need, THEN God will restore you and guide you. (5:6-8)
IF you change your attitude toward those in need, THEN God will restore you and guide you. (5:9-12)
IF you honor the Lord first in your schedule, THEN God will restore your joy in Him. (5:13-14)
The Point: Let’s be sure to connect our fasting with a real pursuit of God, a genuine love for all people, and using our resources to help those in need.
The Next Step: Bring your special offering next week at church.
