Swimming Upstream #4 – MARRIAGE
Marriage in America today is trapped between two narratives:
#1 – __________________________: if I find and connect with the right person, then I will finally be happy and whole.
The Bible reframes this narrative on three fronts:
First, only _______ can satisfy the deepest longings of your heart. (Psalm 16:11)
Second, _____________ is a high and holy calling and marriage is not required to be fully human or fully alive. (1 Cor 7:8)
Third, marriage is _____________ and not a part of the eternal state. (Luke 20:34-36)
#2 – _______________________________: the goal of life is to discover who I am and what makes me happy and to live out and express my personal desires.
The Bible reframes this narrative on three fronts:
First, we should see marriage through an __________________ lens, not a selfish lens. (Philippians 2:3-4)
Second, we need to honor marriage as a community. (Hebrews 13:4) Biblically, marriage is a lifelong _______________ relationship between one woman and one man to be faithful to each other and to follow God’s design for the marriage roles. (Genesis 2:24-25)
Third, marriage is ultimately about __________ because marriage is a picture of Christ’s relationship with His people. (Ephesians 5:32)
