For over 350 years, Americans haven’t stopped arguing about the role that faith plays in public life. How do we, Christians whose ultimate authority is God, interact with a government that doesn’t always have God-honoring policies or politicians? How do we expect to pay allegiance and taxes to a country that is often more sinful than sacred? How should a Christian mix political and religious life?
Beginning with a question, Jesus gives us brief guidance in navigating politics and religion. In doing so, Jesus preaches a sermon to offend everyone. While in some ways mysterious, Jesus’ lesson clearly tells us that while we owe our ruler(s) some things, we owe God everything.
God alone is Lord of All, and he will remain Lord forever.
