Justification and Sanctification

For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. John 1:16 (ESV)

While we live in exile, we still sin. How can we be made right with God, yet still fight sin? Justification describes our status before God. This is described as removing old dirty clothes and dressing up in new clothes. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Sanctification describes the process of growth. This is described as a tree growing over time into maturity. (Psalm 1:1-3) When we struggle with sin, we remember that our standing before God is secured, not by our holiness, but by the holiness of Jesus.

Christians receive grace upon grace from Christ's fullness.

* Christ is our righteousness - His righteousness is imputed to us.

* Christ is our sanctification - He sets us apart and prepares us for God.

* We can't divide Christ - we receive all of Him, not just parts.

* We must think scripturally - start with Christ.

* We receive Christ's fullness from the moment we are joined to Him.

* Sanctification means being separated from sin.

* Sanctification is the process of being prepared for God's presence.

* Justification is a declaration, sanctification is a process.

* Justification pardons sin, sanctification subdues it.

* Justification is complete in this life, sanctification is progressive.

* Justification refers to our standing, sanctification to our state.

* Sanctification does not happen automatically or through a single experience. It is a process.

* Sanctification calls us to action.
