Description

Assisted suicide, otherwise known as Medical Assistance in Dying (M.A.I.D) was legalized in 2016. Since that time thousands of Canadians have had their lives ended through it.

The Liberal government promised a review of the legislation to ensure that vulnerable Canadians were being protected and that the law was working with this in mind. Due to a Quebec court ruling this review was never done. In spite of this, Federal Justice Minister David Lametti, has tabled legislation to expand the current assisted suicide laws to include those who death expectation is not in the foreseeable future and for the mentally vulnerable.

On this show we speak to Katherine Sorenson from Nova Scotia, a woman whose husband died by assisted suicide even though he may not have qualified. Also on this show is Alex Schadenberg from the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition who has been tracking this issue for over a decade and regularly receives calls from Canadians grappling with complexities around the issue.

The legislation is expected to be voted on in early 2021.
