Description

Review:

The Apostle John wrote 1 John when he was in his 70’s or 80’s.
He was the last living apostle at the time of this writing.
He wrote from Ephesus to the surrounding churches.

The WHY?  The reasons John wrote this letter:

To encourage true Christian belonging (1 John 1:3)
To help believers experience true joy (1 John 1:4)
To help believers avoid falling into patterns of sin (1 John 2:1)
To guard believers from false teaching (1 John 2:26)
To allow believers to know with certainty that they are children of God…forever! (1 John 5:13)

1 John 5:1-5

What does it mean to be “born of God”?

Demonstrate right behavior (1 John 2:29)
Does not make a practice of sin (1 John 3:9-10; 5:18)
Overcomes the world (1 John 5:4)
Guards against Satan’s deception (5:18)
Loves one another (4:7; 5:1)
What is biblical love?

Comes from God—supernatural
Demonstrated in action
Christ-centered
The connection between keeping God’s commandments and loving one another

TEN COMMANDMENTS

Exodus 20:1-18

You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol.
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Commandments 1-4 are vertical focusing on our actionable love for God.

Commandments 5-10 are horizontal focusing on our actionable love for others.

Honor your father and mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.

“Which commandment is the most important of all?”

Mark 12:29-31

Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
