If you think about it, faith can be challenging at times. Even when we’re feeling strong in ours, others may be wavering, or even totally shut off. But it’s natural, and even healthy to doubt. Because doubting can be a catalyst for healthy conversations and introspection that can strengthen our own relationship with God.
This Week’s Listener Question:
I’m really frustrated because Sundays cause big arguments in my family. I end up going to church all by myself. My teenagers are really doubting the faith they grew up in and my husband usually sides with them. I’m really sad. What do you think I should do?
Small Group Questions:
1. Think back when you were a child… What did your family teach you about spirituality or faith?
2. What do you remember about breaking out or moving beyond the fantasy stage of faith?
3. Have you ever hit a “wall” which caused you to enter into a season of doubt or question your faith? Describe that season and share where you are today.
4. Take a look at Fowler’s Stages of Faith (see resources). What do you resonate with? What new learning did you gain? How might knowing the stages of faith challenge you to grow or see beyond other “boxes”?
