There's a popular internet meme that says, "That escalated quickly." In Acts 6-8, we see persecution happen to the church in Jerusalem--and yes, it escalates quickly. This intense round of persecution centers around Stephen, one of the first deacons selected by the church, and his debate-gone-wrong with a local Jewish synagogue. Stephen is ultimately killed for his faith (and his convincing proofs that Jesus is the Messiah). Saul, a young Pharisee with ambition, makes his first appearance.
