Setting the Lord’s Table

Our text is 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 [read the text]

As we prepare for the Lord’s Supper, allow me to set the table by giving us some perspective on what it means to have communion in remembrance of Jesus.

In Remembrance.

The phrase is used twice by Jesus in our text…

(v. 24) in regard to the bread He broke and blessed…
“…do this in remembrance of Me.”

(v. 25) And again when He took the cup as said…
“…in remembrance of Me.”

Remember who Jesus is.

(v. 23) “…the Lord…the Lord Jesus…”

The Son of God.

The Spotless Lamb.

The Savior of the world.

Remember what Jesus did.

(v. 24-25) “…My body…My blood…”

Because of who Jesus is, what He did matters.

He suffered for our sins. (beaten, bruised and bled)

He satisfied the wrath of God. (fully and finally)

He sealed a new covenant for us w/ His blood.

Remember why Jesus did it.

(v. 24) “…for you…”

Because of His love for us.

Because we were lost.

Because we were helpless.

Because we were dead in our sins.

Because we were destined for destruction.
