Description

Vocalo has partnered with the Old Town School of Folk Music and Music Moves
Chicago to bring listeners our "Future Folk" series, highlighting several creative,
community-centered resources promoted by these organizations. The fourth installment
features Maila Sylla’s free, all-ages, West African dance class, which strives to
unlock new forms of expression for its students. Through learning about and
performing traditional dance styles, Sylla’s students absorb cultural information
and positive energy — and get a good workout while doing it. We heard from Maila
Sylla about her love of West African dance, the cultural significance of some dances
she teaches and what she hopes people will take away from her class.

"Future Folk" is produced by Ari Mejia. Keep up with Maila Sylla at @MIS.SENEGAL on
Facebook. Special thanks to Ayana Contreras and Arif Smith.
