Description

The US Supreme Court will hear a key case involving redistricting in North Carolina that could have huge implications for the rest of the country, including California.

The outcome of this case could overturn California’s independent redistricting commission and affect how elections are run, from coast to coast.

We are talking about Moore vs. Harper, a case in which the high court will decide whether North Carolina’s state Supreme Court was right to overturn gerrymandered district maps drawn by the Republican-controlled state legislature, and whether a widely debunked legal theory known as the “independent state legislature” doctrine is actually legitimate.

Four of the justices on the US Supreme Court voted to hear this case presumably the four conservatives who have been supportive of this theory in the past, and if a court majority sides with the North Carolina Republicans and rules that state legislatures have complete control of elections, it could open the door to some serious unintended consequences and really wreak havoc on the future of elections.
