Description

If you recently participated in the Los Angeles Marathon, you might have noticed a big, purple party at Mile 21.

That party was led by our KNX Heroes of the Week.

On Sunday, March 9th, the Hirshberg Foundation and Tour De Pier teamed up with members from Cycle Bar to help fight the battle against pancreatic cancer. While runners ran across the city of Los Angeles, dozens of cyclists rode to raise money for research.

"The Purple People Party is our charity's official course support station," says Lisa Manheim, executive director of the Hirshberg Foundation. "We talked about how we can we make the Purple People Party the best cheer station on the course, [while bringing] more energy to the course... and that's how this marriage came to be."

Lisa collaborated with Steph Sklar Mucahy, who owns Cycle Bar locations in Culver City and Santa Monica. Steph has actively supported charities and causes over the years, and she says teaming up for the LA Marathon was a perfect fit.

"I thought what better way to, you know, get out there on course," says Steph. "To just bring some cheer and make a lot of noise, and that's what we did!"

Twenty-six stationary bikes were lined up along the street at Mile 21 of the LA Marathon, so riders could celebrate and motivate runners as they passed by. The Purple People Party involved more than seventy cyclists who rode during three one-hour sessions.

"Marathon day was such an amazing day!" exclaims Steph. "To be able to see all those runners out there on the course - we were just feeling so much love. And we were giving it right back! And, the excitement that people had on their faces when they saw us! It was just really incredible to see it all come to life."

More than $140,000 was raised.

Lisa says it was a powerful day. "Knowing that everything that you've done has been to help someone, or to make a difference in a cancer patient's life. Or impact research long term... its really easy to be motivated."

Collaborating for cause.

We are honoring Lisa Manheim and Steph Sklar Mucahy as our KNX Heroes of the Week, for their efforts to fight pancreatic cancer!
