Valerie Reyes, a 24-year-old from New Rochelle, NY, was bound, gagged, and stuffed alive into a suitcase by her ex-boyfriend, Javier Da Silva, after an altercation in her apartment in January 2019. Da Silva dumped the suitcase with her inside in a Connecticut forest, then used her debit card to steal more than $5,000 while her family desperately searched for her. Reyes suffocated in the suitcase, and Da Silva was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for kidnapping resulting in her death—a heinous crime described by the judge as “brutal, callous, [and] cruel”.
