In this week's episode Brent reviews and expounds on a component of his sermon from 9/5 about our tendency to put people on pedestals. He mentions 7 signs that you've put someone on a pedestal, as well as what to do once you've figured out that you've put someone on a pedestal in your life.
How can you tell if you have put someone on a pedestal:
- You follow them uncritically
- You overlook real faults of theirsĀ
- You let them pressure you, even to the violating of your values and convictions
- You are dependent on their attention, affection, or affirmation
- You own their problems
- You are afraid of them not needing you
- You fret if they don't talk to you
What to do if you have put someone on a pedestal
- Recognize the one word in all 7 identifiers (you).
- Be humble AND courageous
- Have a mature conversation with them (if they don't like you attempting to remove them from the pedestal, it is evidence to you that they are jacked up)
- Refuse to allow #2 & #3 happen again
- Be your own person before the Lord
