John grew up in good ol’ Iowa and joined the Army after failing out of community college. He served multiple combat tours as an Infantry Squad Leader in the 101st Airborne Division. He earned his bachelor’s in history from St. Joseph’s College and his master’s in education from Harvard.
John started writing for and coaching student veterans while working for the VA. John has spoken to Congress as a legislative fellow for the Student Veterans of America and has earned numerous volunteer and advocacy awards. He’s active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and US Military Vets Motorcycle Club.
John has taught everything from incarcerated teenagers, to English in Thailand, to American Youth Ninja Warrior. He's the most tattooed person with a Harvard degree and is always seeking solid book, travel, workout, and whiskey recommendations. John is the author of Combat To College and the Student Veteran Semester Journal.
I served multiple tours as a combat veteran in Afghanistan. I started writing, advocating for, and helping veterans after getting out of the military. I've spoken to congress as a legislative fellow and have written a book "Combat to College" designed to help student veterans as well as a companion journal.
I created a 90 day self-growth challenge. The #FreedomChallenge with NFL Veteran Pat Angerer to provide a guided challenge based on frameworks within the Athletic and military worlds.
I'm the most tattooed person with a Harvard degree and interested in veteran mental health, working to reduce suicide numbers, and connecting people to different forms of therapy. I've struggled through my own issues with PTSD, alcohol, and pills and found purpose in helping others.
I live in the Dominican Republic, where I'm working on programs to help connect people with trauma to the healing power of nature.
I'm passionate about bridging the divide between the military and civilian populations and what each group can learn from each other. I write on my own blog and for other military publications and websites.
I got involved with education after seeing the intense gender discrimination trying to open schools for girls in rural Afghanistan. That led me into international education where I've taught in Thailand, helped build school libraries in Cambodia and been on rural education missions in West Africa.
My goal isn't necessarily to change the world, just to take personal responsibility for having a positive impact on the veteran community and the people, places, and organizations I come into contact with.
